Teaming up with Sean Slade (Radiohead, Dinosaur Jr., Hole) and Matthew Ellard (Morphine, Weezer, Elliott Smith), the month-long recording process features songs that have been in the works for years. Inspired by The Beatles, Elliott Smith and David Bowie and drawing upon personal experiences, Blackmarket brings a refreshing sound to the music industry.“It was great working with Sean and Matthew,” Daryl says, “the contrast between Sean’s ability to capture the feeling of a song and Matthew’s technical standards really contributed to the overall sound of the album. For a group of kids that have played together for so long, the album feels more like an accomplishment than any sort of pretentious satisfaction.”
Blackmarket has also seen significant success in Japan. They have released an EP and LP on FMAC/Rough Trade Japan. Blackmarket had a sold out show in Tokyo in Dec and has been invited to play the FujiRock Festival in July.
One listen to Blackmarket, and it is undeniable that this band has chemistry. The Lake Havasu-based rock quartet has been playing music since they were in junior high, and has grown together as musicians and as a band. Their self-titled EP captures their journey through insightful lyrics, catchy melodies and overall brilliant musicianship.
The EP traces Blackmarket’s journey over the last few years to the band they are today. Each song distinctly tells a story and pulls the listener into the lives of Blackmarket, experiencing their excitement, disappointment, anxiety, loves and losses. The opening track “Magic Tricks” with its infectious guitar riffs gives an inside look at the record industry. The acoustic-driven “White Lie” is a raw, open song dealing with loneliness. These two songs along with the anthemic “Sheila,” “Bad Call” and “Talk Too Much,” give Blackmarket fans a glimpse of what to expect in 2008.
